In mid-October it is now time to make the garden winter-proof. So that you don't forget anything, here is a checklist of which tasks should be done.In mid-October you should make your garden winter-proof
The days are getting shorter, the nights are getting longer and colder - autumn is here. The plant vegetation in your garden now switches down to the gentle cycle, which is now the perfect time to make the garden winter-proof. You now have to do some important work in the garden so that your green paradise comes back to life in full splendor in the spring.
So that your plants or your entire garden comes through the winter, we have put together a checklist for you with the most important tasks that should be done.
Checklist: You have to do these tasks
1. Autumn leaves - the annoying harbinger of winter
"When to collect autumn leaves?
With the fall, the leaves come down from your trees. It is best to wait until the first frost to collect the leaves. Then most of the leaves come off and you don't need to sweep the leaves as often. If you need to keep sidewalks clear (danger of slipping!), It is best to use the leaf blower.
"Freeing gutter from leaves:
So that your gutter is not blocked by the leaves, you should clean it regularly. With a simple protective grille system, however, the gutters can be safely protected from leaves from the start.
"Free lawns from leaves:
It is best to clear the lawn from the leaves before the onset of winter with a lawnmower. This is the quickest and is very easy. The lawn must remain free of leaves so that no brown bare spots remain in the spring. You should set the lawn mower to the highest mowing level and collect the leaves in the grass basket. It is best to clear lawns from leaves using a lawnmower
You can leave the autumn leaves lying on the flower beds. It offers natural protection against frost for the plants.
2. Autumn pruning - make trees fit for spring
October is high time for you to start pruning shrubs, fruit trees, and other trees. This will give your plants more power to sprout in spring. In addition, this generally ensures better growth of the young shoots.
"Pruning shrubs and trees:
Your task is to remove all dead, sick and intersecting branches. Cut off the branches and shoots near the tree trunk. You should also cut branches that have become too long. It is best to cut them off directly over a young shoot.
"Prune the hedge:
As for the hedges in the garden, you should now cut them thinner and smaller. It is best to start with sick and damaged branches. Then you have to shape the hedge until the desired shape is achieved again.
3. Make plants winter-proof
Of course you also have to take care of your plants in the bed and the tub plants. After all, not all flowers, saplings and shrubs are hardy.
As already mentioned, you should now cover your beds with leaves or brushwood. Alternatively, you can also use a garden fleece. But if the leaves fall from the trees anyway and you have to rake them together, you can use them right away.
"Winterize container plants:
As for container plants, it is best to bring them indoors and put them in a cool and dark place (e.g. in the basement) during the winter.Container plants must be packed thickly
Since you certainly cannot bring all of the potted plants indoors, because e.g. are too big or too heavy, you have to wrap them up thick. Proceed as follows:
- Wrap the crown of the plant with fleece
- Place brushwood around the trunk
- Wrap the bubble wrap around the pot and cover it with a linen sack
- Place the container plant on a polystyrene plate
4. Make garden tools winter-proof
"Check and store garden tools:
Garden tools such as Lawnmowers, pond pumps, garden hoses and the like should of course not spend the winter outdoors. It is best to put them in the garage or in the basement during the winter. Before doing so, however, clean thoroughly and possibly also wait.
"Bring garden furniture inside:
Of course, you should not forget to bring the garden furniture and delicate garden decorations inside. This is the only way to enjoy it again next year.
Celebrate garden parties in autumn
Even in autumn there are still mild days when you can fully enjoy the benefits of the golden season in your garden. How about if you give a garden party again? On a covered terrace, where you and your guests are protected from wind and rain, you can e.g. Enjoy the mild autumn evenings with your friends again.Celebrate a Halloween party in the garden
If it gets a little cooler in the late evening, get warm blankets from Zalando to feel cozy warmth outside. Or you sit down at a fire place.
You don't have such a fireplace? No problem! For example, without much work, you can build a fire pit from fired clay bricks, which you have to embed in a paved area.
