Baking English ginger biscuits - simple recipe with baking instructions


It's teatime! - Finally it's time for ginger biscuits. But why buy these extra when you can bake them yourself? This recipe shows how to do it.

"They spin, the British!" Thinks Obelix, when the belligerent islanders take a break at 5:00 in the comic "Asterix and the British" to drink "hot water with a drop of milk". But this is really not a joke. The tradition of afternoon tea time has been preserved in the UK to this day.

In addition to tea and sandwiches, ginger biscuits, called ginger biscuits, are also part of a classic English tea session. However, since not only English people drink tea in the afternoon, but we also like to have a tea hour here in Germany, ginger biscuits are now also available from us. You don't even have to buy the cookies. With just a few ingredients you can bake the right cookies for a typical 5 o'clock tea yourself. So get fresh ginger from the garden and off you go.

What you need for a sheet of ginger biscuits:

‣ 300 grams of flour
‣ 1 packet of baking soda
‣ 200 grams of soft butter or margarine
‣ 150 grams of brown sugar
Ess 1 tablespoon of ground ginger or 1 piece of freshly grated ginger (approx. 2 centimeters)

How to prepare the ginger biscuits:

  1. Put the soft butter / margarine together with the ginger and sugar in a bowl.
  2. Mix and add the flour and baking powder.
  3. Knead everything into a firm, heavy dough. Best with your hands.
  4. Form walnut-sized balls from the dough, place them on a baking sheet and bake them flat with a fork until the biscuits are about 1 centimeter thick.
  5. Bake the dough in the preheated oven at 180 degrees for about 12 minutes until the cookies are golden brown.
  6. Then let it cool down and put it in a tightly closing tin.
