It should be light but robust, so that gardening is easy: if you want to buy a garden spade, you should pay attention to a few things.

Handle and spade blade should be screwed together

Rake, hedge trimmer, lawnmower - these are just a few of the many devices that a garden owner should definitely own. Of course, the garden spade must not be missing, because with this device you can easily dig planting holes for berries, fruit trees, shrubs and the like from almost any soil. So an absolute must-have for every garden owner.

In the meantime, there are countless spade models to choose from in the specialist market, ranging from cheap spades to stainless steel luxury models. But don't just look at the look! What use is a chic luxury spade if it is unwieldy and heavy? Our tips should show you what you should look out for when buying a garden spade.

First of all:

Some find them very practical and tend to use them here, but a folding spade is only suitable for transport, less so for everyday gardening. You should only get such a spade if you only want to do small jobs with it.

Tips for model and material selection

➤ Tip 1 - Select the shape of the stick:

You should choose the spade handle either with the usual T-handle or a knob (depending on personal handling). With the T-handle, however, more pressure can usually be exerted on the spade blade.

➤ Tip 2 - select stem material:

The handle of the spade is mainly made from robust wood, rarely from plastic. Metal handles, on the other hand, are far more stable, but they are also much heavier. In addition, you can replace wooden handles at low cost at any time.

➤ Tip 3 - plastic cover / padding on the handle:

A plastic cover on the handle enables a better and, above all, more comfortable grip. Some of the handles are even offered with comfortable upholstery. Look out for that.

➤ Tip 4 - Select spade leaf material:

Stainless steel spade blades are expensive to buy, but they no longer rust. If you choose a conventional metal sheet and rub it with oil after cleaning, it is also protected against corrosion.

Additional tip:

Clean the spade immediately after each use, dry it and store it in a protected storage place (e.g. in the equipment room).

➤ Tip 5 - Select the size of the spade blade:

The size differentiation of the spade blades depends on the prevailing soil thickness on site. The heavier the soil to be worked, the smaller the spade blade should turn out. Sandy, loose soils, on the other hand, can also be worked well with larger spade blades.

The top edge of the spade blade should also be wide enough so that you can significantly increase the spade force by kicking.

➤ Tip 6 - Connection between spade blade and style:

When buying, make sure that the spade blade and stem are connected with a screw. This makes the handle easier to replace.
